Study on etiological profile of pleural effusion in tertiary care centre in Dakshin Kannada

Background: Pleural effusion (PE) is a pathological state that often develops in patients with thoracic or systemic diseases and if not diagnosed treated early, heralds serious prognosis. Aim of the study was to determine etiological profile PE from exudative transudative pleural fluid. Methods: This cross-sectional conducted participants admitted general medicine ward Yenepoya medical college hospital between period January 2021 December 2021. The were analyzed for socio-demographic characteristics; examination done focus on physical examination, respiratory system, cardiovascular system gastrointestinal system. SPSS used analysis. Results: A total 80 fulfilling inclusion criteria included study. mean age 50.28±15.85 years. Among participants, 36.3% female 63.8% male, male preponderance PE, according Light’s criteria, differentiated into which accounted rest transudative. most common cause TB followed by malignancy. malignancy causing carcinoma lung. All etiologies showed it statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusions: In males, more frequently observed. main causes cancer. One Clinical indicators including pallor demonstrated strong correlation malignant tuberculous effusions. Malignancy empyema substantially correlated clubbing.
